The institute provides family support services for children and families in Los Angeles. Services include court-ordered parenting programs, early head start services for low-income families with at least one child under two and a half years; early intervention for at risk children; family literacy programs; kinship caregiver support groups; parenting skills classes and support groups for fathers; and general parenting skills classes. There are no geographic restrictions.

Early Head Start is a comprehensive child development program that provides individualized care and services to children birth to 3 years old and their families. Services include child and family assessments, home visits, child care services, socializations, parent education, parent involvement in program governance and referrals for other needed services.

The parenting skills program provides a 20 week course that focuses on improving parenting skills and a certificate of completion which is court and DCFS approved. Classes targeted to fathers is available; Project Fatherhood also provides ongoing support groups for fathers. "Men in Relationships" support groups are also part of the overall program, and are facilitated by trained, professionally licensed therapists and social workers. Child care is provided for some meetings and support groups; inquire about availability of child care when applying for the program.

Parent - Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is an intensive treatment program that works with parents and children together to improve the quality of the parent-child relationship. PCIT will teach parents the skills to manage their child's behavior problems. Parents are taught effective child-management skills and given the opportunity to practice these skills until the child's behavior is improved.

The Family Connections program provides early intervention for children, from birth to age three and one-half, with developmental delays, risk factors such as premature birth, low birth weight, poor health; family risk factors such as poverty, teen parents, former foster care, chronic unemployment, and other factors that may lead to family violence or child abuse. The program provides home based parent education. An in-home worker provides weekly support for families through case management, parenting skills, child development information, family communication and discipline and other family management skills. The in-home worker models parenting skills and works with the target child and siblings for a period of nine months. Families with open DCFS child abuse cases are not eligible.

The program provides in-home assistance and weekly support groups for at risk families.

The kinship caregiver support group meets on a weekly basis and includes educational activities as well as social and recreational activities. The group is facilitated by professional staff and child care is provided during the 4 hour sessions.

LANGUAGES OTHER THAN ENGLISH Korean, Spanish; the kinship caregiver support group is currently conducted in English but may be able to accommodate other languages.
