Building Materials/Supplies Donation Programs

Building Materials/Supplies Donation Programs

Provider: HABITAT FOR HUMANITY OF GREATER LOS ANGELES

The agency provides housing services for low-income families who live in the greater Los Angeles area. Services include building materials/supplies donation programs, home barrier evaluation/removal services for veterans and low-income families, home rehabilitation loans for veterans, low cost building materials/supplies, low income home loans for low income individuals and veterans, and sweat equity programs. Services are restricted to the geographic area bordered by the Ventura County line on the west, Mulholland Dr. and Interstate 101 and the 60 on the north, the Pacific Ocean on the south and Orange County on the east.

The agency provides affordable housing solutions for low-income families who cannot qualify for conventional home loans or home improvement. Applicants must currently live in overcrowded or substandard housing; must meet income eligibility requirements; must live in the service area; and must agree to contribute 500 volunteer hours towards the building of their home. Applicants must also be legal residents of the United States.

The Habitat for Heroes program helps low-income veteran homeowners who are in need of critical home repairs. Examples of repair services include wheelchair ramps and interior home modifications for increased accessibility, window and roof replacement as well as mechanical, electrical and plumbing upgrades.

The agency also operates three home improvement stores called ReStore. The store's inventory includes surplus materials from construction projects, donations from people who are remodeling their homes and items from manufacturers' over-stock. All donations are tax deductible, and the donors are given a receipt from Habitat. All donated items are sold at reasonable prices and the proceeds go to supporting the work of the agency.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE Call or walk in for service. CAID or CADL, birth certificates, marriage certificates, proof of legal residency, tax records, and proof of income are required. Applicants are accepted on the basis of need. Call for information on donating building materials. FEES/PAYMENT SOURCE There are fixed-fees for service; participants repay a no-interest loan in monthly installments over a fixed period of time. Applicants must pay 1% of the value of the home. This fee serves as a down payment and covers closing costs. They must also participate in 500 hours of "sweat equity" in the form of volunteer hours that contribute toward the construction of the home.
