Child Passenger Safety Seats

Child Passenger Safety Seats ( Developmental Disabilities )

The association provides information, training and safety programs related to the use of child passenger restraint devices for people nationwide. Services include child passenger safety education, driving safety education, organizational training services, and specialized information and referral. There are no geographic restrictions.

The organization provides community education; technical training and program consultation for professionals and volunteers; and advocacy for the use of child passenger restraint devices like car seats and safety belts, including specialized usage for children with physical and developmental disabilities.

California law requires that all children must be correctly restrained for their own safety while riding in a passenger car, truck or recreational vehicle (RV). Until age eight, children must be in a child restraint device in the rear seat. Children must face the rear of the vehicle until they reach age two, or weigh 40 pounds or more, or are 40 inches or taller. At age eight, children may use a safety belt if it fits correctly. Smoking is not allowed in vehicles with a person under age 18 present. No child under age six may remain in a vehicle alone or with only a person under age 12.

The program promotes a 5 StepTest at to illustrate how the belt fits correctly. Most children need at least boosters until the age of 10 to 12. The organization also provides referrals to programs, such as hospitals and community agencies, which give and/or sell at cost, safety seats.

There are specific requirements for rental car agencies, hospitals and birthing centers, and child care centers. The association will help agencies learn more about their responsibilities. The association offers information for professionals and the public about safety seats which meet federal standards, including brand names, the age of child the seat fits, and information about vehicle installation. In addition, the association provides educator workshops for those who want to teach passenger safety or develop related programs, and offers educational and resource materials for use by individuals and groups, including videos and other audiovisual materials, curricula to be used in schools, flyers, pamphlets, bumper stickers, and posters.

Individuals and organizations who become members enable the association to continue its work. Members receive the agency newsletter, the bimonthly SafetyBeltSafe News. Certain membership levels also receive automatic updating, the bimonthly Safe Ride News, access to a specific section of the Web site and a DVD or online compilation of almost 400 sets of instructions with consistent summary sheets for safety seats made in the past 10 years; plus 25 sets of instructions for restraints for children with special needs. APPLICATION PROCEDURE Call, email, or write for information. Messages are returned days, evenings and weekends.
