This office provides end of life services to people in Los Angeles County. Services include coroner services and mortuary services. The office conducts investigations, inquests, postmortem exams and laboratory tests to determine the cause and mode of death in the certain deaths of people who were unattended by a physician and in all cases of unnatural death such as homicides, suicides or deaths in circumstances of a suspicious nature. There are no geographic restrictions.

This office conducts investigations, inquiries, postmortem examinations and laboratory tests to determine the cause and manner of death in certain deaths as defined by State law. Natural deaths of people who were unattended by a physician prior to their death and in all cases of unnatural death such as homicides, suicides, accidents or deaths under circumstances of a suspicious nature. In addition, the office can provide statistical and other general information for the public and media.

The unit arranges for the cremation of deceased persons within Los Angeles County who are declared indigent or are unclaimed; the unit does not provide burial services. The cremated remains are held for a period of two years to allow family members to claim them before they are mass buried in the cemetery. The Medical Examiner-Coroner DOES NOT provide crime scene and trauma cleaning services to locations were blood or biological tissue or fluids are remaining at the scene of an injury or death. Families, landlords and property owners are advised to contract with a State Registered Trauma Scene Practitioner for crime scene and trauma cleanup. Referrals are accepted from DPSS and other community agencies. The family of the deceased must sign a statement declaring their financial inability to provide for burial.
