The department provides licensing that administers state laws and regulations related to the use of vehicles. Services include disability parking permits, driver licenses, driving/accident records, identification cards, motor vehicle registration, and weights and measures. There are no geographic restrictions.

The agency also issues personalized license plates, and specialized plates for people who have disabilities; licenses and regulates vehicle dealers, manufacturers, distributors, dismantlers, transporters, and salespeople, and driving and traffic violator schools and their operators and instructors; and investigates situations which involve violations of regulations enforced by the department.

In addition, it collects fees for services which involve those related fines, penalties, some parking violations, drivers licenses, ID cards, occupational licensing, and vehicle registration and license plates.

REAL ID: The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has extended the deadline to apply for the REAL ID to 2025. Beginning May 7th, 2025 a REAL ID will be required for every traveler age 18 and older to get through airport security checkpoints for domestic travel. Services for the public are provided online, over the phone and through field offices which are located throughout the state. People may call any office to obtain information or to apply for services. Vehicle registration renewals are now required to be mailed to the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Language capabilities vary among the offices; call the local office for information. APPLICATION PROCEDURE Call for information or to apply for service; appointments are required for service at DMV field offices.

Registration renewals may be completed by mail or online and typically do not need an in office appointment.

Applicants for an original driver license will need to take the following steps:

*Study for the driver license knowledge test
*Make an appointment before visiting a DMV office
*Complete a driver license application form (DL 44) available at the DMV office
*Under AB 60, applicants will need to provide DMV with proof of identity and California residency, see the department website for details on acceptable documents
*Pass a vision test, knowledge test, and if applicable, a road sign test
*Give a thumb print
*Have a picture taken
*Schedule a future appointment for behind-the-wheel driving test, if applicable

A medical examination report is required for a Commercial Driver license. Commercial drivers in interstate commerce must use medical examiners listed on the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners. The National Registry web site can be found at www.fmcsa.dot.gov. FEES/PAYMENT SOURCE The fees for services vary. Drivers license renewal is $38, duplicate license are $30, CA ID cards cost $33. Payment by cash, check, money order and ATM/Debit cards are accepted in office. Credit cards are not accepted in DMV offices, but may be used for Internet or phone transactions. There are no fees for information or literature.
