Discounted Telephone Service

The program provides discounted cellular (wireless) telephone service for low-income people who meet income, residence and tax status requirements in the State of California. The program offers the Universal Lifeline Telephone Service (ULTS) plan to qualified customers when they sign up for wireless service. Certain restrictions apply. There are no geographic restrictions.

Assurance Wireless provides the California FREEdom plan. Eligible customers receive a free phone, free unlimited calling, and free unlimited texting. Voicemail, call waiting, and caller ID services are also included. Wireless coverage is on the nationwide Sprint Network.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE Visit the company website to apply. Households can qualify by receiving certain public assistance programs or by income level.

Examples of the qualifying public assistance programs include:

- Medi-Cal
- Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
- CalFresh (also known as Food Stamps)
- Women, Infants, and Children Program (WIC)
- National School Lunch Program (NSLP)
- Federal Public Housing Assistance or Section 8
- Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) including CalWORKS and GAIN - Tribal TANF

Proof of Program participation includes: A copy of your benefit ID card or other program participation document, a copy of an eligibility letter from an authorized agency, or a copy of a benefits statement (current or prior year). FEES/PAYMENT SOURCE There are no fees for application. Fees may vary for calls made outside of plan or coverage area.
