The Department administers numerous parks, activity centers, cultural centers, playgrounds, pools, golf courses, gymnasiums, skate parks, and tennis centers; operates a sailing center, dog parks, a regional park and a nature center; administers three senior centers; provides special events, festivals and concerts; rents facility and park space and services to private groups; and provides a wide variety of classes, activities, clubs and volunteer opportunities for people of all ages. The services are designed for people in the Long Beach area, but people from other areas are welcome. Classes are available in sports, fitness activities, art, crafts, dance, music, personal improvement, computers and aquatics; sports leagues for adults and youth are also offered. Classes include canoeing, martial arts, fencing, golf, ice skating, sailing, tennis, aerobics, prenatal exercise, Roller Hockey, walking, Tai Ch'i, yoga, drawing, painting, photography, dance, urban and traditional arts, ceramics, knitting, cake decorating, chess, dog obedience, assertiveness training, and financial planning. Special classes are available for pre-school age children, youth, people with disabilities, and for seniors age 55 and older. The Bayshore Playground houses a Co-op preschool for children, ages 3 to 5. Some parks have recreational activities for teens in a designated teen center. El Dorado park West houses the El Dorado Ram Shack, which hosts after school activities for Millikan High School students and middle school students from surrounding schools. Leeway Sailing and El Dorado Nature Center sponsor Spring Break activities for children and adolescents. Six city facilities have senior centers: California Recreation Center, Chavez Park, El Dorado Park West, Houghton Park, the Long Beach Senior Center (see the separate entry), and the Silverado Park Senior Center. The Department offers volunteer opportunities primarily for adults. Positions include camp counselor, youth sports coach, fund-raiser, marketing, nature center docent, aide for programs for disabled people, craft or music teacher, and bilingual assistant.
