Family Preservation Programs
Provider: SHIELDS FOR FAMILIES INC
The agency provides family preservation services for at-risk families in the South Central area of Los Angeles. The program is part of the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services Family Preservation Program. Services include case management, counseling, family preservation programs, family support centers/outreach, and parenting skills development classes for participating families. Geographic restrictions apply for some services.
Intense family preservation and child abuse services are offered through the Compton Family Preservation Network. The family must have a case open with the state and referrals must come from the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS). The Network is a collaborative with community based organizations to reduce the risk of out-of-home placement. Services are primarily in-home, and include counseling, demonstration of homemaking and parenting skills, child care and transportation.
The agency contracts with DCFS to provide Prevention and Aftercare services for families involved with DCFS, as well as those who are self referred, who are living in SPA 6. The program provides activities, resources and supports such as family fun nights and parent-child or family-centered activities, parenting education classes, financial literacy instruction and peer support groups. Staff may provide home visits; families may be linked to additional resources including health and mental health care, educational and vocational services and legal services, as needed. Concrete support for basic family needs such as clothing, food, household furnishings, school supplies, utilities, housing assistance, transportation and minor repairs may also be available. APPLICATION PROCEDURE Call or walk in to apply; an appointment may be required. A referral from DCFS is required for intense family preservation services. Anyone may participate in Prevention and Aftercare services. FEES/PAYMENT SOURCE There are no fees for service.
