The agency provides law enforcement services for individuals in Los Angeles County. Services include child kidnapping alert programs, crime prevention, crime reporting, district attorney services, domestic violence hotlines, general crime victim assistance, hate crimes prevention, hate crimes reporting, internet crime reporting, law enforcement complaints, parental kidnapping legal assistance, and telephone crisis intervention. The office prosecutes felony crimes for all unincorporated areas and cities throughout Los Angeles County. The office also prosecutes misdemeanor crimes in unincorporated areas of the county and in 78 out of 88 cities: the cities of Burbank, Hawthorne, Hermosa Beach, Inglewood, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Pasadena, Redondo Beach, Santa Monica and Torrance prosecute their own misdemeanor cases.

Criminal cases are filed at the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center in downtown Los Angeles and at branch area and juvenile courthouses throughout Los Angeles County. Deputy district attorneys work closely with local law enforcement personnel in their respective regions to investigate and prosecute criminal activity. Deputy district attorneys are prosecutors who represent the people of the state of California.

Additionally, the office provides specialized staff and programs to assist in the prosecution of specific crimes; to provide information and support for people who have been victimized by crime or who are witnesses; and to educate the community about various types of crime, the criminal justice process, the District Attorney's office services, and crime prevention resources.

Representatives from the office's Bureau of Victim Services provide a variety of services to victims of crime. Services include crisis intervention; emergency assistance; counseling referrals; court escort and orientation; restitution assistance; returning of property; assistance with employers; and case status notification.
