General Health Education Programs

The hospital provides health education opportunities for the community through a wide range of classes, programs and activities. Services include breastfeeding classes and support, childbirth education, chronic disease self-management programs for congestive heart failure and for diabetes, CPR instruction, estate planning assistance, exercise classes and groups, general health education lectures, legal counseling, a medical information line, nutrition assessment and counseling, recreational therapy for people with physical disabilities, and smoking cessation programs. Patients, former patients and any interested people from the community are welcome. There are no geographic restrictions.

General health education includes community lectures and educational information on topics including cancer prevention and education, weight control, AIDS, drugs and preventive health care. A noontime lecture series called Medicine, Munchies and Movies is held on the third Friday of the month.

One on one counseling can be arranged for older adults with estate planning questions and needs and for people with general legal questions.

Exercise groups include a TaiChi Chihh gentle exercise class and a therapeutic recreation program for people with disabilities. Currently this program provides golf lessons. Other rehabilitative recreatonal activities include bowling, fishing, concerts, sailing and excursions.

A medical information line "Cancer Answers" is provided for anyone to call with questions or information about cancer, cancer treatements and cancer resources.

A clinical dietician provides nutrional assessments and counseling for weight loss, diabetes management, or a special diet.

Chronic Disease self management for heart failure is provided twice weekly in the Rehabilitation Gym.

Smoking Cessation is a seven week serices provided by the Todd Cancer Institute. There are day and evening sessions available.

The center also provides an auditorium, classrooms and audiovisual and broadcast facilities for public rental. Professional education is coordinated with the University of California at Irvine and Harbor/UCLA General Hospital. APPLICATION PROCEDURE Call the designated contact number to apply or for information. FEES/PAYMENT SOURCE Most classes and activities are free. There is a fixed fee for CPR instruction; a $70 fee for the smoking cessation program; the golf lessons are $15 per person.
