Health Insurance Information/Counseling


The organization administers health insurance programs for children and adults who live in Los Angeles County. L.A. Care Health Plan participates in the following health coverage programs, each with its own eligibility and income guidelines: Medi-Cal, Healthy Kids, Medicare Advantage HMO SNP, Covered California (L.A. Care Covered), Cal MediConnect, and PASC-SEIU.

For eligibility information contact the plan directly. Each plan has different requirements and guidelines.

Medi-Cal covers low-income adults and children. Members may choose to receive care from L A Care, Anthem Blue Cross, Care 1st Health Plan, or Kaiser Permanente. Program benefits include dental care, doctor visits, hospital and emergency room care, immunizations, mental health services, prescriptions, substance abuse services, and vision care.

Healthy Kids covers children ages zero to five. The plan includes doctor visits; dental care; immunizations; mental health services; vision care, including glasses; and hospital and emergency room care. The plan also covers prescriptions that can be filled at local pharmacies.

Medi-Care Advantage plans cover individuals who are entitled to Medicare Part A, enrolled in Medicare Part B, do not have End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), and have full Medi-Cal benefits, with no share of cost. APPLICATION PROCEDURE Call for information or to apply. Trained staff at designated community agencies, at the Family Resource Centers, and at designated LAUSD offices can assist families in filling out the forms for L A Care health coverage programs; an appointment is required. Medi-Cal applications may be submitted at the Family Resource Centers by appointment with an on-site Eligibility Worker from DPSS.

Documentation requires proof of family income, including previous year's income tax form; proof of residence, such as a utility bill, rent receipt or driver's license. FEES/PAYMENT SOURCE Healthy Kids premiums are $0 to $6 a month for each child, depending on family income; co-payments are $5 for most services and prescriptions. Medi-Cal has no premiums or co-pays.

Medicare Advantage HMO SNP have little to no premiums or co-pays; call for information.
