Independent Living Skills Instruction ( Blindness )

The department provides vocational rehabilitation services for people who have disabilities. The service area includes the cities of Bell, Carson, Compton, Gardena, Long Beach, the South Bay including Torrance and portions of the City of Los Angeles.

The agency provides vocational rehabilitation services for adults age 18 and older who have disabilities which interfere with their ability to secure and maintain employment and who can reasonably be expected to be able to work after completing a rehabilitation program. The goal is to help clients prepare for employment and to enhance their ability and potential to live more independently. The services provided are individualized and may include disability-related examination, counseling, pre-vocational or independent living training, job training and placement, equipment that is necessary for the job, and other types of assistance. The agency also provides a Counselor-Teacher Program for the Blind, which provides services for people of all ages who are blind, visually impaired, deaf or hard of hearing. Services are provided from designated county offices (see the site list for details) as well as in the client's home. Services for this program include counseling; specialized information and referral; and training in communication skills, daily living skills, home management, mobility and orientation. There are no geographic restrictions.

The Assistive Technology Loan Program is available through the District Office. Eligible low to moderate income parents and persons with disabilities may apply for up to $35,000 in loans for Transportation or Assistive devices. Loans are granted by eligible lenders and administered by the AT Network. APPLICATION PROCEDURE Call or walk in for information or to apply for service. FEES/PAYMENT SOURCE There are no fees for services. People who need medical care or special equipment may be asked to pay a part of the cost on an ability to pay basis.
