Landlord/Tenant Assistance ( Low Income )

Provider: NEIGHBORHOOD LEGAL SERVICES OF LOS ANGELES COUNTY - SANTA MONICA SELF-HELP LEGAL ACCESS CENTER

The agency provides legal services related to civil matters for low-income residents of the Chatsworth, San Gabriel and Santa Clarita Valleys with incomes up to 200% of the federal poverty guidelines. The areas of law the agency can assist with include problems related to government benefits, housing and landlord/tenant issues, consumer complaints, criminal record expungement assistance, divorce and child custody, immigration issues, disaster relief, community education and outreach, community development, domestic violence services, and some employment benefits. Geographic and income restrictions apply.

Walk-in Self Help Legal Access centers are available at various courthouse locations (Antelope Valley, Chatsworth, Pasadena, Pomona and Van Nuys). These centers provide self representation assistance and forms assistance in the areas of divorce, child custody, child support, guardianship, eviction, name changes, restraining orders and claimant for exemptions (garnishments). Workers rights services are conducted at the Pacoima, El Monte and Glendale offices. Mission College in Sylmar.

This agency is not able to assist in divorce cases in which the children are in the dependency court system.

This agency does not accept criminal or fee-generating cases such as personal injury suits or workers' compensation. Referrals are provided for services the agency does not provide directly. Examples of the types of cases the agency can handle may include problems obtaining financial or health benefits, evictions, legal defense for people who have special education needs, and people seeking to apply for citizenship.

In addition, outreach workers go to Glendale to meet with clients, by appointment, about specific issues. APPLICATION PROCEDURE Individuals may fill out the online form or call the main toll free number at the Administrative site for an initial screening of residency, income, and type of legal case for which assistance is required; an appointment is scheduled or the person can be referred to other appropriate resources.

Workers' Rights Clinics and Self Help Centers are walk-in only. FEES/PAYMENT SOURCE There are no fees for service.

Service hours
Monday through Thursday, 8:30am to 12:00pm and 1:30pm to 4:30pm; Friday, 8:30am to 12:00pm. Walk-in only. Clients arriving late in the day may be asked to return on another day, depending on the amount of time needed to address their situation.
