The Public Works Department provides administrative services for the City of Long Beach. Services include administrative services and maps. The Department is comprised of four bureaus: Business Operations Bureau; Engineering Bureau; Environmental Services Bureau; and Public Service Bureau. Services are restricted to the residents of the City of Long Beach.

The Business Operations Bureau provides central administrative support, coordination, and direction for the entire department. The support includes management of financial resources; centralized personnel and payroll support to the department as well as Long Beach Airport; and providing safe and hazard-free workplace for employees.

The Engineering Bureau is responsible for the design, construction management and operation of city owned streets, alleys; transportation planning and engineering; operation and management of storm water and storm drains; and the City's bicycle and mobility plan. The Bureau also provides design and construction services for capital improvement projects throughout the city and also maintains the record drawings for these improvements. The Bureau also regulates and issues permits for any construction work or other usage of the public right-of-way.

The Environmental Services Bureau is responsible for street sweeping operations and refuse and recycling collection service. The Bureau also enforces vehicular state and local violations and assists in vehicle impound related to stolen vehicles, scofflaws and other incidents.

The Public Service Bureau serves in the care of the public rights-of-way including the trimming of trees in residential and commercial districts and the repair of potholes in City streets and alleys. The Bureau also keeps the traffic signals operating 24 hours a day, maintains the parking meters on streets and in surface lots and upkeeps the street signs, street striping and legends and the red/green/white and blue curbs. The Bureau also provides support during emergency operations including rapid response to unplanned incidents such as storms, accidents, power outages and planned special events.
