The department provides oversight of federal programs for tribal people and tribal governments in the United States. It distributes funding for social services, welfare assistance, housing, education, and Indian child welfare. Services include Native American general assistance, genealogical societies for the Native American community, tribal enrollment records, and specialized information and referral for tribal reservation residents, the Native American community, and Inuit community. There are no geographic restrictions.

The division of Human Services oversees Native American general assistance programs for individuals that live on or near Indian reservations. Tribal staff are contracted to provide a variety of available services to American Indian and Inuit/Alaska Native people directly through the department's division of Self-Determination.

Information and referral for tribal reservation residents, Native American and Inuit/Alaska Native people is available from the department on a variety of issues including education, employment, transportation, and land use.

The division of Tribal Government Services maintains tribal enrollment records and information on genealogical services including tribal organic documents, a guide to tracing American Indian Ancestry, and how to apply for a Certificate Degree of Indian Blood.
