Orientation and Mobility Training ( Veterans )

The agency provides rehabilitation services through the Davidson Program for Independence for people age 18 and older who are blind or visually impaired in Los Angeles County. Services include an assistive technology training, a residential rehabilitation treatment program, independent living skills instruction, and vocational rehabilitation services. Service are provided in cooperation with the State Department of Rehabilitation and the Veterans Administration. Age restrictions apply; there are no geographic restrictions.

For adult program, staff evaluate each individual's needs and develop an intensive five day per week program. Study topics include communication skills such as Braille, typing and computers, and adaptive technology such as low vision aids. Pre-vocational training includes assistive technology training for adults who wish to continue to perform employment duties or increase their chances for future employment through assistive computer technology.

The program provides ongoing independent living skills training in cooking, housekeeping and activities of daily living, taught in two fully equipped demonstration apartments.

Services also include orientation/mobility training including indoor and outdoor travel skills/bus route planning; vocational counseling; and recreational activities. APPLICATION PROCEDURE Referrals from the State Department of Rehabilitation, Veterans Administration V.I.S.T. coordinator, or private insurance are required. FEES/PAYMENT SOURCE There are no fees for the clients; fixed fees are paid by the Department of Rehabilitation or private insurance; veterans services are funded through the VA.
