Provider: CHAMPIONS IN SERVICE - SAN FERNANDO VALLEY AND GREATER LOS ANGELES

The agency provides youth services for young people, ages 5 to 25, who are at risk youth, probationers, or gang members in the communities of North Hills, North Hollywood, Northridge, Pacoima, Panorama City, San Fernando, and Sylmar. Services include case/care management, glasses/contact lenses for students age 5 to 18, mentoring programs, physical fitness, team sports/leagues, and youth job development. Service is restricted to the cities in the service area.

Several agency programs are connected with the Los Angeles County Probation Department. The programs include anger management classes; the "Probation To Work" job development and and workplace mentoring program; and case/care management. These programs are designed to help youth transition from the juvenile justice system back into school and employment. The agency also provides a job developer who places referred youth in jobs with local employers, contractors and unions.

The GRYD (Gang Reduction Youth Development) program is a school/community collaboration that provides case/care management for at risk families, case/care management for at risk youth, juvenile delinquency prevention, tutorial services, and youth development. Youth must be referred by their school counselor, the Probation department, LAPD, a community-based organization or faith-based organization; and must reside in targeted school district areas.

The GRYD program provides each referred youth with a case manager. The case worker provides an assessment and works out an individualized education plan. The plan includes counseling, mentoring, tutorial services, after-school activities and enrichment. The family of the at risk youth also receives mandatory parenting skills development classes, and an opportunity for family counseling. The program continues to interact with the youth and the family for four years.

The agency provides after school activities, community activities and beautification programs, and works with parents, youth and other concerned residents to maintain safe and peaceful neighborhoods. When the youth reach age 14 they are transitioned into pre-employment programs to prepare them for future careers and job opportunities.

The agency provides vouchers for children, under 18, who need glasses. The voucher covers the cost of an eye examination and a pair of prescription eyeglasses.

The agency provides neighborhood sporting events and physical fitness activities, such as martial arts training, for at risk youth and local gang-involved youth. Events include football, handball, soccer and softball games.

The program also organizes outings to Dodger games and other community events.

The program provides computer lab services and computer classes at local school sites. APPLICATION PROCEDURE Call for information; call to schedule an appointment. Youth should have ID and proof of age to participate in some programs. FEES/PAYMENT SOURCE There are no fees for service.
