The department is responsible for the operation and maintenance of Los Angeles City parks, playgrounds, swimming pools, skate parks, golf courses and recreation centers. It also supervises recreational activities and the operation of senior citizen centers which are located on-site at many of the parks, and provides space for AA meetings.

City parks have various activity areas including basketball, volleyball and tennis courts; soccer and touch football fields; picnic areas; baseball diamonds; and children's play areas. Many of the centers also offer physical fitness programs, recreational day camping activities during the summer; academic enrichment programs in reading, writing and mathematics; and recreational activities and field trips. Over seventy locations provide Computer and Technology related classes in Computer Training centers funded by the Broadband Technology Opportunity Program. The city is implementing computer access at over 100 city parks and senior citizen centers.

Kids Play provides physical fitness activities for children, ages 5 to 18 at over 100 parks; Girls Play L. A. offers subsidized sports program for at-risk girls age 13 to 15.

There are three Therapeutic Centers that provide recreation activities for children with disabilities. These centers also have programs for disabled adults and older adults. There are also three Universally Accessible Playgrounds with play equipment for disabled children at Griffith Park, Westwood Park and Lincoln Park.

Some city parks feature free outdoor fitness zone areas with strength, cardio-vascular and flexibility equipment for teens and adults. The equipment offers safe and sturdy options for exercise alone or in groups.

Skate park for skateboarders and dog parks are also available at various park locations. The Department has Universally Accessible Playgrounds with play equipment for disabled children at various park locations.

AA meetings are held at some park locations that are subject to change. APPLICATION PROCEDURE Call or walk in for information.
