Prevocational Training ( Blindness )

Provider: THERAPEUTIC LIVING CENTERS FOR THE BLIND

The agency provides services for people with disabilities who live in Los Angeles County. Services include day programs for children, extended day programs (after school) for children, ages 5 to 17; residential programs for adults and seniors who are blind or legally blind; or who have additional disabilities including cerebral palsy, deafness, epilepsy, mental retardation, behavioral disorders, and neurological impairments; orientation and mobilty training, and prevocational training. The goal of the program is to assist participants to live as independently as possible and to help them develop the skills for self-sufficiency. There are no geographic restrictions.

The residential program offers a small group living environment and an individualized program of education, various therapies if needed, recreation, pre-vocational training, mobility training, and social opportunities to increase the person's independent living capabilities. The program can accommodate people who are at different levels of functional capability. Residents live in agency-developed small group homes. The involvement of the resident's family and friends is encouraged.

The agency also provides day services for adults, age 18 and over, who are blind and have additional disabilities. Day participants are involved in mobility training, recreation, activities to improve communication skills, recreational activities, including swimming, and pre-vocational and vocational training. The program may include participation on a work crew. Day participants may be non-ambulatory and have mild behavior deficits. There is also a Saturday Day Program, for adults with visual impairments or multiple disabilities.

The agency provides extended day care for children, age 5 to 17 who have visual impairments or multiple disabilities. Activities include recreational and educational programs; swimming; adaptive computer instruction; arts and crafts; and field trips. APPLICATION PROCEDURE People may be referred by Regional Center or the Department of Rehabilitation or have other funding sources. People may also self refer to apply for assistance from Regional Center or other funding sources. Call for additional information or to make an appointment. FEES/PAYMENT SOURCE There are fixed fees for both day and residential services which are paid, in most instances, by Regional Center or another referral agency.
