Sewing/Needlecraft Volunteer Opportunities

Provider: RETIRED AND SENIOR VOLUNTEER PROGRAM - ALL PEOPLES COMMUNITY CENTER

The program provides volunteer opportunities for adults, age 55 and older who live in Bell, Cudahy, Huntington Park, Lynwood, South Central Los Angeles, South Gate and Watts. Services include advocacy/ombudsman volunteer opportunites, food sorting/packing volunteer opportunities, meal preparation/serving volunteer opportunities, RSVP program, sewing/needlecraft volunteer opportunities, tutoring volunteer opportunities, and volunteer recruitment/placement. Services are restricted to cities of Bell, Cudahy, Huntington Park, Lynwood, South Central Los Angeles, South Gate and Watts.

Volunteer recruitment/placement services include an assessment of the volunteer's interests, expertise and available hours and placement in an appropriate public or private, non-profit agency. Agencies who wish to recruit volunteers to use in their programs may call the agency and place a request.

Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) participants serve from a few to more than 40 hours a week in organizations including hospitals, libraries, youth/senior centers, police stations and educational facilities. RSVP involves seniors in services that match their personal interests and makes use of their skills and lifelong experiences.

Food sorting/packing volunteers work in the agency's emergency supplemental food program. Volunteers help bag, register and hand out food to low-income families.

Individual/group advocacy volunteers work in community advocacy.

Meal preparation/serving volunteers help prepare and serve hot congregational meals.

Sewing/needle craft volunteers work as Quilting Bees. Volunteers make lap-blankets for senior shut-ins and blankets for newborns.

Tutoring volunteers work as Rolling Reader volunteers and Time to Read volunteers. Rolling Reader volunteers tutor children in reading at local schools. Time to Read volunteers tutor children in reading using magazines such as Sports Illustrated for Kids, Teen People, and Time for Kids all in partnership with Warner Bros. Volunteers also mentor/tutor children with incarcerated parents. Training is provided.

The agency in which the volunteer is placed may provide on-the-job training while the volunteer is on duty. The agency may complete background checks and fingerprint clearance on volunteers who work with children. Volunteers who request reimbursement from the agency for expenses or mileage must present government issued identification (drivers license, ID card, passport, etc.). If this agency places a volunteer with another non-profit agency, that agency may have different volunteer requirements. The agency provides supplemental insurance while the volunteer is on duty. APPLICATION PROCEDURE Call the agency to volunteer. FEE/PAYMENT SOURCE Volunteers are not required to pay any fees or incur any costs.
