Sexual Assault/Incest Support Groups

Sexual Assault/Incest Support Groups ( Adult Sexual Assault Survivors )

Provider: EAST LOS ANGELES WOMEN'S CENTER

The program provides sexual assault services for people of all ages in Los Angeles County with particular emphasis on the needs and sensitivities of people from the Hispanic community. Services include a bilingual 24-hour hotline, accompaniment services, bilingual short term, face-to-face counseling and occasional support groups for adult and child sexual assault survivors and their significant others; and rape awareness presentations for the community. There are no geographic restrictions.

The hotline provides crisis intervention, short-term counseling and information and referral to other needed services for people of any age who have been sexually assaulted; follow-up is done with callers to ensure that assistance has been received. The program also provides accompaniment services for survivors who need support when seeking medical treatment, reporting the assault to the police or appearing in court.

Individual and conjoint counseling are available to survivors and/their significant others. Counseling is short-term in nature with the objective of helping the individual through the crisis. People who require long term counseling are referred elsewhere. Mutual support groups facilitated by a therapist are also available to survivors and their significant others when there are enough people interested in this modality to form a group.

Men who have been sexually assaulted are welcome to request any of these services. A 2-hour rape awareness presentation which includes basic self-defense techniques is available to community groups that apply. Schools may access the teen peer counseling program which arranges for younger staff (usually people age 18 through 21) to talk to students about sexual assault prevention. The program will assist battered women with information and referrals to shelters, counseling services and TRO assistance. APPLICATION PROCEDURE Call for service or to apply.
