Specialized Information and Referral
Provider: SANITATION DISTRICTS OF LOS ANGELES COUNTY
The Districts provide sanitation services for Los Angeles County. The agency does not provide refuse collection services; refuse collection services are provided by independent private, for-profit contracting agencies only. People inquiring about their local refuse collection contractor should consult their phone book listings under 'garbage collection.' The service area includes 78 of the 88 cities in L A County, excluding L A City.
Services include waste water and solid waste management; residential and industrial connection fees and permits; a recycling center; and the building, operation and maintenance of sewage works for more than half the population of Los Angeles County through 24 separate districts. In addition, the agency operates a hotline which provides information about household hazardous waste collection. The hotline provides information about sites in Los Angeles County where people can dispose of hazardous household materials, and local roundup events in communities throughout the County.
It also maintains landfill sites which provide for the disposal of all forms of non-hazardous refuse materials and solid waste. Landfill sites include the Calabasas Landfill and Scholl Canyon Landfill; see the separate entries for details. The agency also operates the South Gate Transfer Station, the Puente Hills Materials Recovery Facility, the Downey Area Recycling and Transfer Facility (DART), and the Commerce Refuse-to-Energy facility, see separate entries for details.
