Specialized Information and Referral ( Older Adult/Aging Issues )


This office coordinates and plans services for adults 55 years and older in a variety of locations in Los Angeles County (excluding Los Angeles City) by the Workforce Development, Aging and Community Services (WDACS). Services include administrative entities, area agencies on aging, housing search and information, merchandise/services discount cards (SFMNP), printed materials, senior advocacy groups, and specialized information and referral. This is primarily a planning and administrative office. Staff can also provide information and assistance for senior services. There are no geographic restrictions.

The agency administers various programs offered at senior centers and community senior service agencies. These programs may include health screening, information and referral, nutrition education and congregate and home-delivered meals, vouchers for the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program, transportation to nutrition sites and to other destinations in the community, housing, employment, legal counseling, advocacy for government benefits and for consumer problems, will preparation, case management, in-home support and ombudsman services for seniors who are in long-term care facilities.

Discounted food coupons for seniors are provided through the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP), which operates annually from May through November for older adults age 60 and older who meet federal poverty guidelines. Coupon booklets containing ten $2 checks may be redeemed for food at local farmers markets; booklets are available until they run out. Applicants may apply once per year; husbands and wives may apply separately.

The agency also houses the Los Angeles County Commission on Aging, an appointed senior advocacy commission which advises and coordinates public policy, programs and service delivery plans concerning older adults.

Printed materials about aging, housing for older adults and elder abuse issues are also available. APPLICATION PROCEDURE Call the Call Center for information about centers which provide direct services. Call for information about how to apply for the Senior Farmers Market Food Program (SFMNP). Older adults may also walk directly in to a local senior center to apply for the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program. FEES/PAYMENT SOURCE There are no fees for information from this office.
