Provider: JEWISH FAMILY SERVICE OF LOS ANGELES - VALLEY STOREFRONT

Due to Coronavirus center is closed and services are being provided virtually. Please call for more information.

This is a multiservice center which provides a comprehensive network of non-sectarian social and health services primarily for senior citizens who live in the San Fernando Valley, Burbank and Glendale area. The core program of the agency is counseling for seniors and their families and a variety of social services which may help older people enrich their lives and avoid premature institutionalization.

In addition to counseling, the services include information about and referral to relevant community services, a telephone reassurance program, linkage with community services and case management, a resource for in-home supportive assistance, protective services for seriously impaired seniors, recreational activities, health screening and immunizations and congregate meals.

The agency provides both professional and paraprofessional individual, conjoint, family, and group counseling which may focus on a person's adjustments to aging, intergenerational issues, marital difficulties, or any other concern that a senior and his or her family and significant others are dealing with.

People may call or come to the center for information about and referral for all types of services that may be helpful for seniors. In addition, free legal counseling and assistance is available for people who have limited or fixed incomes through Bet Tzedek; see the separate entry for that agency. The program assists seniors and people who have disabilities to locate reasonably priced in-home help.

The agency offers a number of supportive services for seniors which include alternatives to institutionalization for frail elderly people through service coordination by case management teams. For information about these programs see the separate entry Jewish Family Service of Los Angeles-Multipurpose Senior Services Program. In addition, the center provides daily phone contact with people who are homebound or anxious; arrangements for counseling and financial planning for people who anticipate a move to a long term care facility; and linkage for people who want in-home assistance with aides the agency has recruited, trained and certified (see the separate entry under A Personal Care) Protective services for people who are seriously impaired and have no other supports are available and may include assistance with daily living tasks like bill payment, check writing and money management; the agency may serve as legal conservator for an individual in some instances.

People may come to the center for preventive blood pressure checks and flu shots. People age 60 and older may also participate in the congregate meal program which offers hot kosher lunches during the week; the meals provide an opportunity for participants to socialize as well as to eat a balanced meal. There are also a variety of social and recreational activities for seniors at the center which may include arts-related programs, crafts, bingo, cards, discussion groups for men, and current events programs.
