Tutoring Volunteer Opportunities

Tutoring Volunteer Opportunities

Provider: L A'S BEST AFTER SCHOOL ENRICHMENT PROGRAM

The program provides volunteer opportunities for high schoolers and adults in Los Angeles. Services include clerical volunteer opportunities, computer volunteer opportunities, crafts volunteer opportunities, fundraising volunteer opportunities, recreational activities volunteer opportunities, setup/cleanup volunteer opportunities, storytelling volunteer opportunities and tutoring volunteer opportunities. There are no geographic restrictions.

The program, held in 195 elementary school sites in the LAUSD, utilizes the services of volunteers in three ways: Regularly Scheduled Volunteers, Special Event Volunteers and Administrative Volunteers.

Regularly scheduled volunteers are utilized, Monday through Friday, 2:30pm to 6:00pm. Individuals volunteer at their convenience during the specified program hours. Volunteer duties include, but are not limited to, homework assistance and tutoring in math, reading, computers and science, storytelling, crafts, cooking, music, dance, drill team, playground recreation and performing arts.

Setup/cleanup volunteers work at fundraising events or annual regional and city-wide showcase events, such as LA's BEST "Community Jam Against Violence" Talent Showcase.

Volunteers must show proof of TB clearance, accomplished within six months prior to volunteering. The initial examination must consist of a Mantoux skin test. If the Mantoux skin test is positive, a chest x-ray will be required. Volunteers may be tested by their own physician, or visit a Los Angeles County Health Center.

Although the agency does not provide training, the agency does provide all volunteers with a booklet on how to tutor math and reading. Volunteers are supervised by the agency's educators. The agency does not complete background checks and volunteers are not required to take and pass any tests. APPLICATION PROCEDURE Call or visit the website to apply; a TB test is required. FEES/PAYMENT SOURCE Volunteers are not asked to incur any costs or pay any fees.
