The department provides services to veterans and their dependents who live in Los Angeles County. Services include veterans benefits assistance, veterans burial assistance, veteran education benefits, and specialized information and referral. There are no geographic restrictions.

The department advocates on behalf of veterans to ensure that they receive the benefits to which they are entitled. It also provides special outreach to seniors and veterans who have disabilities.

Services include individual advocacy and information and referral to assist veterans and their dependents and survivors obtain all benefits outlined in federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and policies; including medical care, compensation for service-related disabilities, and burial rights.

Veteran education benefits include the G.I. Bill and Veterans Dependents Educational Assistance.

Outreach to seniors and veterans who have disabilities may include home or hospital visits.

In addition, the department also provides veterans burial benefits for indigent veterans referred by the Coroner's Office and LAC USC Medical Center Mortuary.

The agency operates Patriotic Hall, a 10-story building which has meeting rooms and recreational facilities for use by veterans' organizations and patriotic societies. In addition, it administers the Veterans' Advisory Commission which advises the Board of Supervisors about problems which relate to veterans in the county. The Fully Developed Claim (FDC) program is an optional initiative that allows veterans, service members and their survivors access to a faster decision for their compensation, pension, or survivor benefit claim. The FDC process attempts to resolve claims in 90 days or less. The process involves submitting all evidence at the time the claim is filed and certifying that the claimant has no further evidence. The recommended way to file a claim is electronically, to do so the claimant must go to ebenefits.va.gov. It is also recommended that they appoint an accredited Veterans Service Officer to assist them in gathering the evidence to support their claim. To file by paper, the claimant must fill out a VA Form 21-526EZ and visit the local regional office. At the regional office, the claimant can appoint an accredited Veterans Service Officer. Claimants can call 1-800-827-1000 for further assistance.
