Vocational Education ( Developmental Disabilities )

The center provides services for people with disabilities for people age 22 and older who have a developmental or intellectual disability who live in the San Gabriel Valley. Services include vocational education and vocational rehabilitation. There are geographic restrictions.

The program provides vocational evaluation and skills training services. The goal is to assist participants to maximize their social and vocational capabilities and to become self-sufficient through competitive employment. To qualify people must be unemployed or underemployed, must be able to take care of their personal needs, must not have current or recent involvement with alcohol or drug abuse, must not pose a danger to self or others, must be able to get to and from the center, and must be able to pay for the services through eligibility for funding or private sources.

People who apply attend an interview and acceptance is based on an individual's ability to benefit from the current evaluation, training, and placement opportunities. People may be accepted for programs in basic computer operations, environmental services (custodial or grounds maintenance), food service occupations, or production assembly. People may also participate in situational assessment/work tolerance-work hardening programs which provide short-term practical vocational experience which enable staff to assess the person's physical abilities, aptitudes, and interests and offer the person an opportunity to develop physical tolerance for work. The assessment program lasts 15 to 20 days and the work tolerance-work hardening program four weeks. The basic computer operations course lasts for 18 weeks; all of the other programs last 17 weeks.

The supportive services provided for participants include vocational and personal counseling, work adjustment assistance for people whose problems interfere with their participation in training or with obtaining and holding a job, ESL classes, employment preparation training which includes role-playing interviews, and job placement and follow-up. APPLICATION PROCEDURE Call to request an application and to arrange an application interview. People are encouraged to visit the facility and to discuss their interests and plans with staff prior to enrolling. FEES/PAYMENT SOURCE There are fixed fees. The courses provided are approved for training by agencies like the State Department of Rehabilitation and WIOA.
