Vocational Education
Provider: COMPTON UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT - ADULT SCHOOL - COMPTON ADULT CENTER
The school provides education services for adults, age 18 and older, who live in Carson, Compton or North Long Beach, or in the unincorporated areas of Supervisory District II. Services include adult basic education, CalWORKS programs, citizenship preparation, ESL classes, GED/high school equivalency test instruction, high school diploma courses, vocational education courses, and special programs for older adults and adults who have disabilities.
There are special programs for the visually impaired. Services are provided at two adult center sites and at 12 elementary school sites. Programs for older adults and adults with disabilities are provided at the Exceptional Adult Center (see the separate entry) and two senior centers.
People may enroll in an academic program which leads to a high school diploma. Course offerings include English, Math, General Science, United States Government, and other high school requirements. A GED preparation program is also provided. The program reviews English grammar and spelling, social studies, natural science, literature and mathematics. TANF recipients who need adult basic education may enroll in the CalWORKs programs. To enroll, CalWORKs students need a referral from their worker.
The vocational education classes include child care/day care worker, civil service exam preparation, computer operation, computer network control operator, medical insurance billing, nurse assistant/ home health aide training, medical assistant, office occupations, parent education, pharmacy technician, phlebotomy technician, industrial sewing and furniture upholstery.
Training is provided for child care/day care workers at entry level positions. The program includes both classroom instruction and on-the-job training in local public and private facilities. Students must be 18 years of age and should have an ability to follow both oral and written instructions, and enjoy working with young children and adults. A certificate of completion is awarded to anyone who completes the course with a "C" or better grade and who has maintained 80% attendance.
Word processing/computer operator classes include training on IBM and MacIntosh computers and common software such as Access, Excel, Internet, WordPerfect, MicroSoft Word, Pagemaker and Lotus 1-2-3. Typing of 25 wpm is required for admission to this course.

Walk in to apply for classes. Most classes are on an open enrollment basis. Call the guidance and counseling office for GED testing schedule and fee information. FEES/PAYMENT SOURCE There are no fees for citizenship, ESL, GED or high school equivalency courses, or to people who are age 55 and older. Course fees are $5 to $50. A $5 student membership/ID card fee is assessed one time in each school year.
