Vocational Rehabilitation ( Developmental Disabilities )

The department provides vocational rehabilitation services for teenagers and adults age 16 and older who have disabilities. Service is provided at four locations in the Orange/San Gabriel District; see site list for details. The service area includes the cities of Anaheim, El Monte, Fountain Valley, Fullerton, Industry, Santa Ana, West Covina, and Whittier. Services are provided for people who have mental or physical disabilities which interfere with their securing and maintaining employment and who require rehabilitation services to enter or maintain employment. The goal is to help clients prepare for employment and to enhance their ability and potential to live more independently. Services provided are individualized and may include disability-related examinations, counseling, pre-vocational or independent living training, job training and placement, equipment that is necessary for the job, and other types of assistance. The agency also provides a Counselor-Teacher Program for the Blind, which provides services for people of all ages who are blind, visually impaired, deaf or hard of hearing. Services are provided from designated state offices (see the site list for details) and may include home visitation. Services for this program include counseling; specialized information and referral; and training in communication skills, daily living skills, home management, mobility and orientation. There are no geographic restrictions. The Assistive Technology Loan Program is available through the District Office. Eligible low to moderate income parents and persons with disabilities may apply for up to $35,000 in loans for Transportation or Assistive devices. Loans are granted by eligible lenders and administered by the AT Network. APPLICATION PROCEDURE Call or walk in for information; referrals are accepted. A TDD number is available at the district office location for people who have a hearing disability. On-line applications are available through the agency's website. FEES/PAYMENT SOURCE There are no fees for rehabilitation services. People who need services like medical care or special equipment may be asked to pay a part of the cost on an ability to pay basis.
