Provider: NEIGHBORHOOD LEGAL SERVICES OF LOS ANGELES COUNTY - EL MONTE PROGRAM OFFICE

The agency provides advocacy for low income people in Los Angeles County. Services include certificate/forms assistance on issues of family law and some civil matters, self-representation assistance and welfare rights assistance. The programs do not provide representation in court. There are no geographic restrictions.

Self-Help access centers are located in the Van Nuys, Pasadena, Chatsworth and Pomona courthouses to assist people who do not have lawyers to prepare forms and to understand legal issues in matters of family law such as child visitation, divorce, paternity, guardianship; and in civil matters such as eviction, and landlord/tenant issues. The program can also link people with a mediator or conciliator if there is a need for mediation. The self-help program can not provide assistance in criminal, small claims, immigration or bankruptcy cases.

Welfare rights assistance is provided from the El Monte and Pacoima offices to help people obtain benefits to which they are entitled, such as CalWORKs, CalFresh, GR, Medi-Cal or SSI.

Welfare rights, housing, health care advocacy, family law involving domestic violence and immigration assistance is provided in the El Monte, Pacoima and Glendale offices. LANGUAGES OTHER THAN ENGLISH Armenian, Cantonese, Farsi, Korean, Mandarin, Russian, Spanish; additional languages available through AT&T language line. APPLICATION PROCEDURE Self-Help Legal Access Centers are walk-in only; fill out the online form or call the Main Toll Free number for an appointment for welfare rights assistance.
