Welfare to Work Programs
Provider: EAST LOS ANGELES COLLEGE - SOUTH GATE CAMPUS
The college provides employment services in a special public employment and training program for the Alameda Corridor area of Los Angeles. The college provides intake for this job training and employment program for people age 17 and older, who live within the Alameda Corridor. Cities served include portions of Carson, Compton, Huntington Park, Long Beach, San Pedro, South Central Los Angeles, and South Gate. To enroll, participants must bring ID and two forms of address verification.
The program provides training in both non-trade and trade occupations. Participants in the non-trade occupations will be employed in brush clearance, graffiti removal, and beautification projects. The construction trades program is a pre-apprenticeship program that gives participants experience in such trades as carpentry, cement work and other construction-oriented occupations. Training includes assessment, job readiness training, a Driver's License workshop, classes in basic subjects such as Job Math, and workshops to encourage participants to develop job retention skills.
The duration of the programs is 8 weeks. After the program ends, the participants receive a cash bonus and a transportation stipend. Graduates will be able to enroll in Long Beach or Los Angeles Community college training programs, enroll in further vocational training, or begin a trade apprenticeship program in a Union. The program utilizes the EDD and the One-Stops to provide job placement for graduates of the program.
