Functional Needs Registries
Provider: LOS ANGELES COUNTY OFFICE OF EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT - ALERT L A COUNTY
The program provides disaster services through an emergency alert mass notification system for residents of Los Angeles county. Services include disaster warnings and special needs registries. The program was formerly known as Specific Needs Awareness Registry (SNAP). There are no geographic restrictions; however, residents of the following communities are highly encouraged to register: unincorporated communities under the direct representation of LA County, and residents of cities with contract law enforcement provided by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department that do not have a mass notification system in place.
This is an internet-based notification service that allows county residents, including those with disabilities or other special needs, to register their cell phone number(s), landline numbers, voice over internet protocol (VOIP) numbers, email addresses, text capable phone numbers, and TDD/TTY capable phone numbers with public safety officials in the event of a disaster. The system uses database and mapping technology to notify residents and businesses of emergencies or critical situations, and to provide information about evacuations or other necessary actions.
Both listed and unlisted individual and business land line telephone numbers are automatically included through the telephone companies' 911 database.
If a call is picked up by an answering machine or voice mail, the system will leave a recorded message. If the number called is busy or does not answer, the system will redial the number in an attempt to deliver the message; it is also TTY/TDD compatible. Information that is collected is confidential. The agency does not guarantee priority response to registrants.
