Individual Counseling

Provider: CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY LONG BEACH - COLLEGE OF EDUCATION - COMMUNITY CLINIC FOR COUNSELING AND EDUCATIONAL SERVICES

The clinic provides counseling services for children, adolescents and adults who live in the Los Angeles County. Services include individual counseling, conjoint counseling, special education assessment and redmedial education. There are no geographic restrictions.

Services are provided during the academic school year. Clients are accepted for services twice yearly September and February and the Early Childhood Clinic in early November. Interested individuals and parents or guardians should download the appropriate application packets at www.ced.csulb.edu/asec/clinic and mail or walk the completed forms into the clinic.

For the child or adolescent to qualify for the counseling service they must be referred by parent, school personnel or school mental health professional; for the special education assessment the child must be one to two years below grade level; and for remedial education they must be two years below grade level in reading or math.

Counseling for adults includes individual and couples counseling on such topics as anxiety, depression, educational concerns, grief and loss, relational concerns, self-esteem and traumatic stress.

Counseling for children and adolescents concentrates on areas such as assertiveness, communication and motivation, emotional resiliency, listening and self-esteem building.
The Psycho-educational Assessment is for children and adolescents ages 6 to 18. The assessment is to determine their individual strengths and weaknesses. After administrating cognitive, achievement and processing tests a written report is given to parents with intervention recommendations based on the child's or adolescent's needs.

The Early Childhood Clinic offers assessment for children ages 3 to 6. A report summarizing the child's performance on cognitive, social/emotional adjustment and pre-academic assessments are provided.

Remedial education is for children ages 6 to 16 and involves individual academic assessment and intervention session weekly in the Spring and twice weekly in the Fall for struggling students in the areas of reading, writing and math. Evidence-based interventions are selected and individually administered based on assessments of the student's academic skills. A report is provided which details the assessment results, the responsiveness of child to intervention and recommendations for future interventions.
