Adoption and Foster/Kinship Care Support Groups

The program provides foster family services for foster and adoptive parents who are seeking certification; foster parents in need of support; and kinship caregivers, such as grandparents, who are caring for their relative children. The services include parenting skills development classes; parenting skills development classes dealing with children with special needs such as mental, physical or learning disabilities; kinship caregiver support groups; and educational workshops on foster care issues. There are no geographic restrictions.
People who are seeking to become foster or adoptive parents are required by the State to attend specialized training leading to certification; people who are referred to the program from foster family agencies are required to complete some pre-requisites. The program provides the mandated training.
In addition to the parenting education component, the college provides ongoing foster parenting workshops on a variety of topics. The workshops may deal with foster children with special needs such as mental retardation or autism; parenting teens; LGTBQ youth; or foster children with a history of sexual, physical or mental abuse, and/or neglect.
LANGUAGES OTHER THAN ENGLISH American Sign Language interpretors are available with 2 weeks advance notice.
