Disaster Response Services
Provider: LOS ANGELES COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT - ALTADENA STATION
Under SEMS (the California state law that governs disaster response), the Los Angeles Sheriff is the Disaster Commander for the Los Angeles Operational Area. The Sheriff is responsible for managing disaster response and allocation of response resources in any disaster response situation in which a more local government cannot cope using only its own resources.
In the event of a disaster or emergency, sheriff's deputies assist people who have disabilities and the elderly in reaching safety or in obtaining services. The department does not maintain a list of older adults or people with disabilities, however, when a call is received providing the location of individuals with special needs, the department will assist.
Through its Disaster Communications Service, the department serves as part of the Office of Emergency Services. It provides volunteer opportunities for amateur radio operators and organizes a supplemental communication system during natural and other disasters.
The Emergency Operations Bureau's responsibilities for disaster preparedness include strategic emergency planning, coordination of countywide disaster exercises, and training for the Emergency Operations Center's staff.
