Home Visit Volunteer Opportunities
Provider: WISE AND HEALTHY AGING - VOLUNTEER PROGRAM
The program provides volunteer opportunities for adults, age 18 and older who live in Los Angeles County. Services include advocacy/ombudsman volunteer opportunities, volunteer recruitment/placement. Volunteer opportunities include clerical volunteer opportunities, friendly telephoning volunteer opportunities, home visit volunteer opportunities, meal preparing/serving volunteer opportunities and mentoring services volunteer opportunities volunteer opportunities.
Volunteer recruitment/placement services include an assessment of the volunteer's interests, expertise and available hours and placement in an appropriate Wise and Healthy Aging program. The program at which the volunteer is placed may provide on-the-job training and continued education.
Opportunities are available in the Adult Day Service Center, Club 1527 membership program, Wise Connect program, Peer Counseling program, Tax Counseling and Preparation Service and clerical opportunities.
Adult Day Service Center volunteers interact one-on-one and in groups with older adults who are dealing with limitations due to Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and stroke. Activities include art, singing and dancing, exercise, cooking, gardening, games and discussions.
Club 1527 membership program skilled volunteer instructors provide a variety of intellectual, social and/or physical programs. Programs include yoga, Pilates, tai chi/meditation, memoir writing and book clubs.
Wise Connect program volunteers make friendly visits, daily phone check ins, assist with groceries, drive to medical appointments, organize social outings and anything else.
Peer Counseling program seek volunteers age 55 and older to provide individual counseling and facilitate weekly support groups to assist their peers in dealing with emotional issues. Training and weekly supervision are provided by a licensed mental health professional.
Tax Counseling and preparation service sponsored by AARP is for tax payers with middle and low income with special assistance to those ages 60 and older. Volunteers assist in preparing Federal and State tax returns for low and moderate income seniors and disabled individuals for at least 4 to 6 hours per week between February 1st and April 15th each year. Volunteers participate in extensive IRS-approved training course, pass a qualifying exam and become IRS-certified tax preparers.
Clerical volunteers answer phones, prepare mailings, file and disseminate materials, plan special events and take on various other tasks at various offices of the agency.
