Transitional Housing/Shelter
Provider: GOOD SHEPHERD SHELTER
The agency provides shelter services for battered women and their children who need a safe place to live. Services include transitional housing/shelter targeted to battered women. There are no geographic restrictions.
Referrals are normally received from other battered women's shelters; and the intake procedure is lengthy. This is not an Emergency Facility.
The program accepts women and their children from all geographical areas and is designed to serve women who have at least two children. Children 12 years or younger are accepted. The average length of stay is from six months to one year. Residents are required to fully participate in the shelter program. The shelter accepts women who are pregnant and women who have disabilities who can care for themselves.
The facility includes 12 separate apartments where women can live with their children. Services include individual counseling; a learning center for the women which offers parenting classes, basic home management skills, computer classes, language skills and support; and a tutorial center for the children which offers academic and social development experiences. Staff also assist each woman to make and realize plans for the future and can provide referrals to other community resources and relocation assistance. Food is provided until the resident has a source of income and can purchase food to prepare.
