Railroad Workers Retirement Benefits

This is the federally required benefits programs which provides retirement and disability annuities for qualified railroad employees; spouse annuities for their wives or husbands; and survivor benefits for the families of deceased employees who were insured under the act. The agency, the United States Railroad Retirement Board, also administers the Railroad Unemployment Insurance Act and certain provisions of other federal laws covering railroad employees. Railroad retirement beneficiaries are covered by the federal health insurance program known as Medicare and the board has certain responsibilities in this regard.
