Prejob Guidance

The college provides employment services for adults, age 18 and older, who are TANF recipients. Services include employment preparation, job training formats, prejob guidance, and workstudy programs. There are no geographic restrictions.

Support services include Vocational English as a Second Language (VESL), job search/placement services and a certification program in Plastics Technology.

Courses offered in this program include Occupational Preparation and Life Skills classes. The Occupational Preparation program provides a broad range of knowledge in basic job skills and personal skills which relate to employment. The Life Skills curriculum focuses on attitude, excellence, productivity, communication, money management, physical and mental health, and an overview of educational and job training resources.

Work-Study programs for TANF and general relief recipients provide part-time employment of up to 20 hour per week, for full-time (12 units) students. The program pays 75% of the students' wages for a period of six months. If the employer is unwilling to pay full wages after this time period expires, the student may be given a new job assignment. A CalWORKs participant may receive Work-Study assistance for a period of two years, while in school.

Vocational programs include the Adult Vocational Learning Community (AVLC) in Plastics Technology, and a Bilingual Office/Computer Technology program.

The AVLC program is a collaborative in which plastics industry companies provide current technology training in plastics to the English Language Learner. The program combines hand-on job training, VESL classes, and employability skills. A special computer software provides instruction in English and in Spanish. Targeted counseling, one stop registration and instructional assistance are provided. Those who successfully complete the 9-week course receive a certificate.

The Bilingual Office/Computer Technology course is a 4-week course in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint/Internet. Student also benefit from hands-on training, VESL and employability skills. Job placement services are provided.
