Parenting Skills Classes

The agency provides family life education services for at risk families and at risk adolescents in Los Angeles County. Services include developmental screening, early head start, parenting skills classes, teen expectant/new parent assistance, and teen pregnancy prevention. There are geographic restrictions for the Early Head Start program.
Parenting education classes and discussion groups focus on child development, family communication, discipline and family relationships.
Teen parenting education courses are provided for pre-teens, age 10 to 12; and to pregnant or parenting adolescents, age 13 to 18. The courses focus on raising a healthy baby, school readiness, being a good role model, and working toward self-sufficiency.
The teen pregnancy prevention program is provided for sexually active pre-adolescents and adolescents, ages 10 to 18. The goals of the program are to increase the teen's self-esteem, to improve family communication, to improve school success, and to prevent pregnancy in adolescence.
Juvenile delinquency diversion programs are provided at several locations for the siblings of teen parents.
Teen parents who have special needs children may enroll in Early Head Start. The program, for children from birth to age 3, provides in-home assistance, developmental screenings and early intervention services for babies at risk of physical and developmental disabilities. The Early Head Start program is open to the general public if they reside in the service area. The Early Head Start program serves zip codes 90002, 90003, 90044 and 90047.
Volunteers are actively recruited to work in family programs as tutors, to participate in excursions.
