Regional Occupational Centers
Provider: LOS ANGELES UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT - MAXINE WATERS EMPLOYMENT PREPARATION CENTER
The center provides education services to people in Los Angeles Unified School District. Services include adult basic education, adult high school diploma programs, citizenship education, english as a second language, GED instruction, regional occupational programs, and vocation education. There are no geographic restrictions.
Programs include ROP courses for adolescents, age 14 or older.
People age 16 to 18 who are high school dropouts or who are at risk of being dropouts may attend if they are referred by their local school counselor. In addition, the center offers an ROP program which allows people age 14 to 18 to attend both local high school classes and classes at the center concurrently, with the permission of their school counselor.
The program provides a six-level ESL class for the public and for WIOA participants who need to upgrade their language, reading and writing skills.
Vocational education is provided in the areas of clerical and word processing, custodial, landscaping, welding, powerline mechanic, construction/trades, certified nursing assistant/home health aide, licensed vocational nursing, health career clerical (billing, coding, transcription and terminology), and business computer occupations, and computer repair.
When a person applies to attend the center an assessment of the person's skills, interests, and abilities is done before the person is placed in a particular program. If a person needs remedial assistance in basic skills, s/he attends the on-grounds learning center along with or as preparation for the vocational training program.
