Pro Bono Legal Aid Volunteer Opportunities

Provider: PUBLIC COUNSEL

The agency provides volunteer opportunities to individuals living in Los Angeles County. Services include bulk mailing volunteer opportunities, data entry/word processing volunteer opportunities, filing volunteer opportunities, fund raising event volunteer opportunities, grant development volunteer opportunities, graphic design volunteer opportunities, language translation/interpretation volunteer opportunities, pro bono legal aid volunteer opportunities, public speaking volunteer opportunities, receptionist volunteer opportunities, sign language volunteer opportunities, and writing/editing volunteer opportunities.

The agency provides various clerical volunteer opportunities and the chance to experience public interest law by learning the operational side of a public interest law firm. Clerical volunteers will process bulk mailings, work in data entry/word processing, file, and act as a receptionist answering telephones.

Fund raising event volunteers and grant development volunteers will assist the agency's development staff. Volunteers will help plan and coordinate fund raising events. Grant development volunteers must possess solid writing skills and a willingness to provide basic clerical support.

Graphic design volunteers will help the agency design a scrapbook of newspaper articles about the agency.

Language translation and sign language volunteers will translate legal documents and assist in political asylum cases. Fluency in writing, reading and speaking is required.

Pro bono legal aid volunteers are needed to handle casework that is relatively simple, suitable for new attorneys seeking to develop new skills. Casework is also available for more experienced attorneys seeking to expand their legal experience. Some cases are highly complex. In addition to work on litigation matters, volunteers can also assist with transactional and administrative matters as well as work in specialized areas such as bankruptcy and health care. The agency seeks volunteers who are paralegals, legal assistants, law students, expert witnesses, and lawyers.

The agency seeks public speaking volunteers who are lawyers interested in community outreach. Volunteers will be able to make specialized presentations in their areas of expertise to community groups, social organizations and schools. Attorneys who make a minimum of one presentation a quarter will receive MCLE credits.

Writing/editing volunteers research and write stories for the agency newsletter and website.
