Mentoring Services Volunteer Opportunities

The agency provides literacy programs in Los Angeles County and throughout southern California. Services include mentoring programs, mentoring services volunteer opportunities for college/university students, mentoring volunteer opportunities for seniors and literacy volunteer opportunities for seniors. There are no geographic restrictions.
Student mentors are trained to serve preschool-age children in low-income neighborhoods. Through an established curriculum, mentors help children develop language and literacy skills to be ready for school.
The program Jumpstart Los Angeles Community Corps provides literacy and mentoring volunteer opportunities for seniors age 55 and older who live in Los Angeles County. The program provides services to children ages three to five in preschools located in Compton, Boyle Heights, Echo Park, Pico-Union, South Los Angeles and Torrance areas. The volunteer program starts in August and ends in June. The volunteer recruitment includes an initial phone assessment and if eligible there is an 8 week training program which covers early childhood education. Seniors may volunteer from 15 to 40 hours per week and are provided a stipend which is non-taxable. Volunteers are reimbursed for mileage, lunch during training and lunch at the volunteer site, seniors are also allotted paid time-off.
