Nutrition Education

Provider: FOOD ACCESS LOS ANGELES

The agency provides nutrition education for people of all ages in Los Angeles. Services include healthy cooking classes, demonstrations of healthy fresh food and healthful preparation techniques and community and school-based nutrition education.

The Good Cooking Classes consist of six weekly sessions that cover food and nutrition basics. The classes are taught in an interactive manner, and allow participants to shop the farmers market for groceries. The curriculum covers shopping on a tight budget, recipes (translated into Spanish, if needed); and cooking instruction. Classes are held at most SEE-LA Farmers' Market locations.

The Farm to School program provides school-based nutrition education in which a farmer addresses food growing and nutrition basics in LAUSD elementary and middle school classrooms. Reservations for the program should be made three weeks prior to the event. The grower will do a 30 minute presentation to groups of up to 40 students. The farmer will bring fresh produce for the children to sample. In the Farmers' Produce Stand presentation, the grower will bring 3 or more types of fresh fruit and vegetables and set up a display similar to the set-up of a Farmers' Market booth.

Some market locations have cooking classes on-site; activities for children, health screenings and tips for getting the most out of shopping with the CalFresh/EBT card.
