Ex-Offender Reentry Programs

Provider: LOS ANGELES COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH SERVICES - CORRECTIONAL HEALTH SERVICES - ADMINISTRATION

This program administers and provides mental health and related services for adults age 18 and older who have serious mental illness who are incarcerated. It also offers referrals for ongoing care for people who are released from jail.

The services provided include psychiatric evaluations; crisis intervention; individual and group therapy; medication; socialization; recreational and occupational therapy; and evaluation for involuntary hospitalization for all inmates. While any inmate may be referred, the program gives priority to the most severely mentally ill people.

The program also provides acute care in a 46-bed psychiatric inpatient unit at Twin Towers Correctional Facility for inmates throughout the county jail system who need short-term intensive treatment and/or evaluation for involuntary hospitalization. In addition, a day treatment program is available for inmates who show symptoms of a serious mental illness and who participate voluntarily. Both the inpatient and day programs include individual and group therapy, occupational and recreational therapy, medication monitoring, and case planning.

The program also provides referrals for aftercare services upon release from jail. Staff link clients with community services, provide case management for mentally ill offenders who are in community placements, and assist homeless chronically mentally ill clients to locate resources that can help them establish a more stable lifestyle.
