The Council acts as the governing body for the City of Los Angeles. Fifteen elected officials enact ordinances that are subject to the approval or veto of the mayor. The council orders elections, levies fees, authorizes public improvements, approves contracts and adopts traffic regulations. It adopts or modifies the budget proposed by the mayor, provides funds, supplies and equipment for city departments and offices. It also creates positions, fixes salaries and establishes the number of employees in budgeted departments. Meetings of the council are open to public. They are held in room 340 of City Hall at 10:00am on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. The council also sponsors LA Cityview on cable television channel 35, a program which televises city council meetings; and Councilphone, a public information line which provides callers with council updates (See the separate entry).
