Family Support Centers/Outreach
Provider: SAN GABRIEL / POMONA PARENTS PLACE FAMILY RESOURCE AND EMPOWERMENT CENTER
The program provides family support services for parents of children age 0 to 22 with developmental disabilities living in the San Gabriel Valley. Services include certificate/forms assistance, a family support/outreach center, parent to parent networking, parenting materials, seminars, and specialized information and referral, and are available to residents of Altadena, Arcadia, Azusa, Baldwin Park, Bradbury, City Industry, Claremont, Covina, Diamond Bar, Duarte, El Monte, Glendora, Hacienda Heights, Irwindale, La Puente, La Verne, Monrovia, Phillips Ranch, Pomona, Rowland Heights, San Dimas, Sierra Madre, South El Monte, Valinda, Walnut, West Covina, and portions of Pasadena and Whittier.
The agency provides specialized information and referral services to families with developmentally delayed children. The agency refers families to agencies and collaboratives that provide early intervention services in the areas of audiological services, family education, infant development programs, medical services, occupational and physical therapy, and psychological services. The Family Resource Center can assist parents to prepare application for Regional Center and gather the appropriate documentation to accompany the application or appeal. The center can also arrange parent to parent networking, either one on one or in a parent support group.
Home visits can be arranged for services and parent support.
The agency also maintains a lending library stocked with parenting materials such as books, literature and videos which provides information for families with special needs children. The agency publishes a quarterly newsletter that is available to parents in hardcopy form or online at www.parentsplacefrc.com.
The agency also markets and presents between 5 and 10 seminars and workshops a year aimed at preparing families to help their developmentally delayed children to transition from early intervention programs to programs provided by the public school system. Recent seminar/workshop topics include children's basic education rights, in-home support services, applying for SSI/SSP/SSDI, transition services; overview of legal rights of students age 3 to 22; a disabilities/possibilities seminar; as well as an information fair.
