Provider: LOS ANGELES COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF PARKS AND RECREATION - GEORGE WASHINGTON CARVER PARK
The department plans, operates and maintains county parks and recreation areas which include playgrounds, golf courses, botanic gardens, a gymnasium, landscaped areas around county buildings, riding trails, skate parks and bicycle paths. Services include park security, lifeguard services, swimming instruction, recreation leadership, computer and related technology classes, lectures, nature study centers in wilderness areas, operation of major regional recreation areas, as well as internet courses that provide virtual instruction. There are no geographic restrictions.
The department provides a family-oriented wellness and fitness program, Healthy Parks, that includes periodic health screenings, prenatal fitness programs, physical fitness programs for youth and adults, nutrition education, and special fitness programs for youth at risk of obesity. Programs vary from park to park; call for information.
Recreational activities/sports are offered at a majority of the parks and may include dance instruction, playgrounds, picnic grounds, arts and crafts, martial arts instruction, athletic fields/courts, a variety of sports leagues and teams for all ages, extended day care after school for children age 6 to age 12, tiny tots program for children age 3 to 5, parent/child activity groups such as Mommy and Me for very young children 18 months to 3 years.
Some county parks feature an outdoor fitness zone area with aerobic and skeletal exercise equipment. The equipment provides high-impact resistance for exercise alone or in groups.
The department maintains a YouTube page that offers a virtual recreation center with a variety of instructional videos for exercises and activities at home. Please visit Parks From Home Virtual Recreation Center for information.
A number of the county parks have community gardening programs in which local residents are allowed to cultivate some park land together as a Community Garden to grow produce and to encourage an interest in healthful eating in the youth of the community. There are no age restrictions, however. Gardening hours are daylight hours, Monday through Sunday.
