Provider: COVINA - VALLEY UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT
The district administers comprehensive education services for children who are in kindergarten through grade 12 who live in Irwindale, Covina, and West Covina. The district administers 12 elementary schools, three intermediate schools, three four-year high schools, one continuation high school, one adult education program, and one regional occupational program center.
An infant program is available for hearing impaired infants age birth to three and their families. Special education services are also provided for preschool and older children who have language/speech problems, who are deaf or hearing-impaired, and for youth who have profound developmental delays; pre-school children who do not require intensive services are also eligible. Similar programs and services are provided for school-aged children with learning handicaps.
In addition, the district provides California School-Age Families Education Program; First 5 Family Literacy and Pre-K , a State Preschool program, and a gifted and talented education (GATE) program.
The Family Literacy Program is called Project: ESTEEM. Services are restricted to low-income families in the Covina USD living, primarily in the cities of Covina, Irwindale and West Covina. The project is conducted at 3 school sites in the district: Covina Elementary, Manzanita Elementary and Workman Elementary. The program has four mandatory components for both parents and children.
Early Childhood Education for preschool age children, 3 years to 5 years, at a center based preschool, and ECE development activities for children, including one home visit per month; Parent child intergenerational literacy activities (PCILA); Adult education, including ESL or GED instruction or job training; and Parenting Education. Families are selected who will benefit from all four mandatory components, while meeting eligibility guidelines.
Supportive health and mental health services are also available for all students. A before and after school child care program is available.
