Adult Basic Education

This is a two-year community college open to the general public for post-secondary education. There are no geographic restrictions.
The college offers a two year program which includes transfer for liberal arts and general education requirements to four year colleges and universities; occupational programs which lead to vocational or licensure careers; and both credit and non-credit remedial and community education programs for self-improvement, cultural and recreational purposes. Low cost child care is available for student's children while they are in class.
The college offers the Single Parent Academy Program for low-income single parents who can profit from a semester course which focus on issues such as self-esteem, assertiveness, career exploration, educational planning, and job training resources. Anyone who is a single parent who has children younger than age 18 may apply, particularly those who have never worked outside the home, are unskilled, or are unemployed. The goal is to assist participants to define personal and vocational goals and to implement them.
The college Learning Assistance Center provides instruction for students who need to review pre-collegiate skills in math, reading and writing. The Center, additionally provides assessment of skills and a personalized study plan. The services are available to Mt. SAC students, alumni, high school students and adults from the community.
The tutoring program is open to any Mt. SAC student. Tutors, who are paid college students or adult volunteers, circulate among the students, spending no more that 30 minutes with English/Humanities students and 15 minutes with Math/Science students at a time. The program encourages independent work as much as possible. Students also have access to a computer lab to write papers or use e-mail for school purposes.
The college also maintains a large farm for students who are interested in studying livestock breeding, veterinary science, and horticulture.
